The one thing he knew he would need was a longer, larger brew paddle for stirring and mixing his mash. I carved this cherry paddle a lot like an actual canoe paddle, only with two, two inch holes on the working end for increased mixing ability. It was the first time I had ever attempted to carve anything with tight tolerances that could hurt the user if not carved correctly. My customer gave me full creative say in this, so I went crazy on it. The fore grip has flame style carvings, and the butt end has curved stripes from the top to the bottom. I went with walnut because to me, it represents not only elegance, but also strength, much like the artwork that gets made there. It is carved 360 degrees around, so from any angle, you can see different details from the wing tips to the body of the “bird”. Because they also do piercings there, I went with a stylized tribal shape for the body that has been used for weighed earrings to stretch ear lobes. Together, the tribal body and the wings work seamlessly to convey exactly what we both wanted for the piece.
